RE:CONNECT

In this project I explored the online queer communities of VRchat, a free social virtual reality game where players can create, interact and connect with others.

Due to the pandemic and hostility of the real world towards the LGBTQ community, a large online community has gravitated towards VRchat.

I interviewed Mabel, with her full-body tracking set up she toured me around her favorite worlds while telling me her story. She is one of the moderators of this particular community, with over 1000 members. She is based in rural north-east of the United States and joined the group around 2018. Mabel organizes regular community events such as game nights or parties.

This server is not only a platform for other queer VRchat players to meet up, but they also offer help and resources such as gender education, voice practices and 3D avatar and world creation for VRchat.
